Amana kids orphanage was the founded by the efforts of volunteers from the city of Harar, who could not turn away from a tragedy unfolding before their eyes. In 2005, there were five kids who lost parents in one of the public hospitals in Harar. After observing this tragedy, volunteers decided to take the initiative and alleviate the sad plight of the extremely disadvantaged children. Unable to turn them back to the silent cries and despair, they resolved to get involved and make a real difference. they organized group of committed friends, individuals and set in motion the beginnings of Amana Kids Orphanage.
After providing several basic needs such as food, shelter, cloth and medical treatment to sustain the life of the kids, assistance was provided to existing organizations in Harar. Thereafter, in 2005, Amana registered as an independent NGO. This led to Amana Kids organization’s conception and establishment. The number of children under the care of Amana Kids has grown from five orphans to 33.
Amana organization was established in the city of Harar, located 525 kilometers East of Addis Ababa. Harar has a population of 200,000 of which 60% are urban and the remaining 40% rural. The mainstay of the rural population is agriculture; predominantly crop production and animal rearing.
Gender disparities are high in the area, with low female school participation; partly due to the need for work in the home economy, direct educational costs and negative cultural perspectives.
Amana was established to help eliminate some of the deprivations orphan children face in and around Harar. In 2005 we reached out to five kids. Today, we have reached 33 children ranging from kindergarten to seventh Grade. Their ages range between 3 and 17 with complete gender equality. Amana will add an additional 10 to 50 kids annually until the future goal of 500 kids is reached.
